      Every year, on a frosty January morning, an endless column of worshippers make their way through the vineyards. It’s the Feast of Saint-Vincent Tournante, and all Burgundy is jubilant. The festival begins with this procession, followed by a high mass and a banquet during which some 12,000 bottles are uncorked. Rotating? Because the festival changes village each year, to honor a different appellation and showcase the diversity of Burgundy’s wine-growing terroirs. For a year or two, the village pulls out all the stops to welcome several thousand people for this memorable weekend.

      Why is Saint-Vincent celebrated in Burgundy?

      Saint-Vincent is the patron saint of winegrowers, honored since the Middle Ages. In 1938, the Confrérie des Chevaliers du Tastevin decided to relaunch this festival, which had run out of steam, and it was a success.

      When and where will Saint-Vincent's Day be held in 2025?

      January is the time when winegrowers resume pruning their vines, and so it’s on this date that this great celebration of the winegrowing world takes place. Its origins lie in the spirit of solidarity of the village brotherhoods, who invented a “social security system” to help winegrowers in distress, sick or suffering from the vagaries of the weather. Since then, every village has a statue of its own Saint Vincent, who stays with a family for an entire year. At the end of January, brotherhoods from all over wine-growing Burgundy travel to the designated village to celebrate their patron saint. A health crisis, a pandemic – nothing could defeat Saint Vincent. The pugnacity of the people of Burgundy ensured the continuation of this beautiful festival. In 2023, the festival was held in the village of Couchey, and in 2024 in Morey-Saint-Denis.

      In 2026, it will take place in the Maranges region between Côte d’Or and Saône et Loire, in the villages of Dezize, Sampigny and Cheilly on January 24 and 25, 2026.

        What to do during a Saint-Vincent tournante?

        The whole of Burgundy's wine-growing region will travel to the designated village to celebrate its patron saint.

        As in Asterix, it always ends with a banquet, but let’s take it from the beginning… First, there’s a village and its volunteers who have worked all year to organize a festival that may not return for another 30 years. All generations have worked hard to showcase the village’s heritage, anticipating the pride of welcoming people from next door or from the ends of the earth. But let’s set the scene: it’s a bit like theater, there are “tableaux” that are repeated year after year, but that we love: a display of multicolored banners floating in the winter sunshine, thousands of garlands of colorful flowers, grapes overflowing from harvest baskets and vintage viticultural equipment evoking the work of winegrowers in a landscape of sleeping vines, welcome to Saint-Vincent! After mass, the impressive parade of saints rivals the finest Pardons in Brittany, with no fewer than 100 brotherhoods taking part! Last but not least, the prestigious Confrérie des Chevaliers du Tastevin, whose rituals are inspired by the last orders of chivalry of the Burgundian court, thanks the old winegrowers and winemakers, sometimes very moved, by enthroning them…

          The Saint-Vincent winegrower organizers have planned an incredible weekend. Plunge into the heart of Burgundy tradition and experience an exceptional Saint-Vincent with tastings, a banquet dinner, musical entertainment and conviviality.

          At the end of the morning, the tasting cellars are open, but can only be accessed with the Saint-Vincent glass. Each year, a different glass is chosen to enhance the tasting, embossed with the appellation’s coat of arms and accompanied by tasting tickets. You’ll be able to taste wines from several vintages, and sometimes a “Cuvée Saint Vincent” created for the occasion. Take advantage of the opportunity to talk to the winemakers, as this festival is a chance for them to showcase their appellation and a viticultural style defined by the Burgundian concept of Climat. A climat is a parcel of vines with its own personality, history and, above all, its own unique taste. It’s up to you to discover it.

          And between two tastings, you can enjoy a meal à la bonne franquette, and while it’s a far cry from the pig’s dinner of yesteryear, the stalls scattered around the village will delight you with local products such as snails, parsleyed ham or beef bourguignon. Depending on the village, a gastronomic banquet (sometimes with the help of the region’s many Michelin-starred chefs) is offered for lunch or dinner, with the added bonus of lively Burgundian folk music and song.

              A village in celebration

              Un village en fête also features musical groups, exhibitions and events to help you discover wines and the work of the vine. At the end of the afternoon, once you’ve taken a tour of the village, take the opportunity to go for a walk. There’s always a little wine trail on the hillside to help you burn off those extra calories. Away from the hustle and bustle of the village, the winter landscape is as peaceful as it is sumptuous, and who knows, maybe you’ll be lucky enough to catch a sunset?

              And the Saint-Vincent de Beaune: what is it then?

              Every year, Beaune’s winegrowers organize festivities including wine tasting and a banquet in the imposing bastion of the Hospices de Beaune. The Confrérie de la Saint-Vincent de Beaune and the ODG des Vins de Beaune organize the Saint-Vincent de Beaune festival. It begins with a religious ceremony, followed by tastings in the afternoon. Beaune wines are uncorked and tasted at the Chapelle Saint-Etienne. The day ends with the ceremonies to hand over the Saint-Vincent de Beaune to one of Beaune’s wineries, who will keep it warm for a whole year. A procession follows, with music, juggling and street arts. And as always in Burgundy, it all ends with a banquet – the winemakers’ banquet, of course! You’ll have to wait and see for the dates of Saint-Vincent de Beaune. Now that you know almost everything, the best thing to do is to come to Burgundy and enjoy this festive experience.
