International Festival of Baroque and Romantic Opera
A not-to-be-missed event for classical music lovers

International Festival of Baroque and Romantic Opera

Every summer, Beaune vibrates to the sound of the greatest masterpieces of Baroque and Romantic opera. The Beaune International Baroque and Romantic Opera Festival attracts music lovers and early music enthusiasts to Burgundy in an exceptional setting. 2025 marks a turning point with a new artistic director, Maximilien Hondermarck.

A world-renowned festival for over 40 years

A revolution in 2025

Created in 1982, the Beaune International Baroque and Romantic Opera Festival has established itself as an essential reference in the world of Baroque music. Musicians specializing in this style, which first appeared in the 17th century, are delighted to come and perform each year in the capital of Burgundy wines. The creators, Anne Blanchard and Kader Hassissi, have made this Festival one of the most important in the world of classical music in Europe. Their ambition was to revive the great lyrical works of the 17th and 18th centuries. This inspired couple were determined to preserve the authenticity of the original scores and remain faithful to them. Anne Blanchard’s programming has always been inspired, and has won the loyalty of a demanding audience. The setting for the concerts is an important part of the charm of this musical festival.

A tribute to Baroque and Romantic opera

Every year for the past 40 years, the festival has featured operas by Baroque composers such as Monteverdi, Handel, Vivaldi and Mozart. The contrasting notes of Baroque music resonate with both power and gentleness in the Cour de l’Hôtel-Dieu des Hospices de Beaune. In recent years, the repertoire of Romantic music and its 19th-century works has been added to the Baroque repertoire. This is an opportunity for audiences to [re]discover the masterpieces of Romanticism, a musical movement that emphasizes emotions. Scores by Berlioz, Beethoven and Brahms impose the piano forte within the walls of the Collégiale. The aim of the festival’s creators is to highlight historical interpretations of the works played. The instruments are period instruments, the interpretation faithful to the first performances, the musical journey back in time is guaranteed.

Beaune's heritage at the service of classical music

Beaune’s architectural heritage contributes greatly to the magic of the festival. Concerts are held mainly in the Cour des Hospices de Beaune. The natural acoustics enhance every note played. The softness of a summer’s evening, the gradually fading light and the splendor of the site all contribute to this extraordinary musical experience. Other performances take place indoors, at the Collégiale Notre-Dame. This jewel of medieval heritage offers an intimate, solemn atmosphere. What a thrill to be surprised by the subtle balance between counterpoint and harmony in a work by Johann Sebastian Bach.

Internationally renowned artists

meet in Beaune

Over the years, the festival has welcomed renowned conductors and soloists, including William Christie, Marc Minkowski, Jordi Savall, Philippe Jaroussky and Cecilia Bartoli. These artists, specialists in the Baroque and Romantic repertoire, contribute to the renown and artistic excellence of the event.

Edition 2025

Audiences await Maximilien Hondermarck's touch

for Festival programming

The arrival of Maximilien Hondermarck at the helm of the Festival International d’Opéra baroque et romantique de Beaune is full of surprises. This singer of sacred music will be able to preserve the authenticity so dear to the public, while adding his own innovative touches. The keys to the festival’s success will, of course, be there again: new operas in concertante versions, recitals by prestigious soloists and the presence of leading ensembles on the Baroque scene. But it’s in the area of outreach and young audiences that innovation will be most tangible. Turning novices into future classical music lovers: a noble ambition for the festival in 2025.
