Spotlight on Beaune's heritage

Illumination of Beaune's emblematic buildings Beaune city of light

In Beaune, a unique experience at night: light scenographies projected onto 7 emblematic buildings.

Beaune city of light

An extraordinary visual and sensory experience.

The luminous and colorful animations are an invitation to contemplate and discover the historical heritage of the Burgundy wine capital. A change of scenery is guaranteed thanks to this nocturnal staging which takes you along the ramparts, to the squares and inner courtyards of the Burgundian city. More than 30 monuments and fortifications are also illuminated, and by the end of the tour, the city will hold no more secrets for you! Don’t forget your Smartphone, which you can use to download an audio-guided tour of the city and gain access to additional historical content.

Notre-Dame Collegiate Church

Projections trace the different stages in the building’s construction. The collegiate church of Notre-Dame, built mainly in Romanesque style by the canons, has undergone a number of additions over the centuries. In 1844, the famous architect Viollet-le-Duc undertook restoration work under the direction of Maurice Ouradou.

Hôtel des Ducs de Bourgogne

The Wine Museum

The play of light along the timber-framed gallery on the second floor evokes the wars and victories of Philippe Le Bon, Duke of Burgundy. If you’re visiting during the day, don’t forget to visit the Musée du Vin, the first ecomuseum in France to be awarded the Musée de France label. It traces the history of vine cultivation and wine-making from ancient times to the 1920s.

La Chapelle Saint-Etienne

The former chapelle des Carmélites now serves as an exhibition hall. The scenography features formal gardens and lush cascades of flowers, evoking the Sun King’s visit to Beaune in 1658.

Hôtel-Dieu - Hospices de Beaune

The exterior wall lends itself to an astonishing scenography focusing on the personality and work of the Hôtel Dieu’s founders, Nicolas Rolin and his wife Guigone de Salins. This 15th-century charitable institution is undoubtedly one of the city’s landmarks, and the lighting alternates between the builders’ coats of arms and the great Salle des Pôvres.

Le rempart des Dames

The old fortification wall serves as an introduction to the Burgundy wine capital. So don’t be surprised to discover highly symbolic elements of the city, such as the vineyards, cellars, casks and even the renowned Hospices de Beaune Wine Sale. In 2015, the town, its major wine merchants and its vineyards were listed as a Unesco World Heritage Site under the title Climats des vignobles de Bourgogne.

The Marie de Bourgogne Gate

This projection pays tribute to the various historical figures of Beaune, including Charles the Bold, Duke of Burgundy, Isabelle de Bourbon and their daughter Marie, the last heiress of the Valois dynasty in Burgundy.

Within the walls of this gateway is one of our two reception desks, where you can meet our teams.

The Belfry

The slender walls feature the famous Chronophotographie du chat en chute libre by Etienne-Jules Marey, a physician and physiologist born in Beaune in 1830, considered one of the precursors of cinema. The façade then opens onto clock faces symbolizing the acceleration of time.
