CHATEAU DE GERMOLLES

The best-preserved residence of the Dukes of Burgundy.

30 km south of Beaune and close to Chagny, a visit to the Château de Germolles, the best-preserved residence of the Dukes of Burgundy, offers a rich evocation of ducal court life in the late Middle Ages.

Duchess's residence

In 1380, Philippe le Hardi, Duke of Burgundy, offered the château to his wife Marguerite de Flandres. Originally austere, this “fortified house” was transformed into aluxurious country residence by the Duchess, who invited the finest artists of the Burgundian school. This edifice, a testament to the refinement of the princely court on the eve of the Renaissance, is today in a unique state of conservation.
